Using up yarn!

So I just finished up my scrap yarn blanket this week!  As a crocheter, once in a while a friend or family member will give me yarn they got from their aunt or grandmother.  90% of the time it is the Red Heart Supersaver yarn.  Now this isn't a horrible yarn, but it's pretty scratchy and not really suitable for making comfy soft hats.  Also, the colors are ones that the person wasn't all that into, so sometimes the yarn is a bit ugly.

I've had a bunch just taking up room so I plan on getting rid of most of it by making these blankets for random people in my life.  This one will probably be the most colorful since I was using most of the small amounts of yarn.  It's also a bit small so I think it'll be good to give away to someone for a lap/wheelchair blanket.

When making items out of yarn there is thing called "blocking" where you stretch and steam or dampen a piece so it'll lay out nice and flat and usually look much better.   When it's an acrylic yarn, you can heat it up until the yarn melts together slightly and the item becomes less stiff. This is called "killing" the yarn.  So when looking up how to make my blanket a little softer, I told my husband later that if anyone asks about my search history "How to kill an afghan", I just forgot to add the word "Blanket" in there! Afghan blanket! Sigh.
